STAR IN A COMIC!
Plus: Mega Robo SPOILERS???
Here’s a bit of exciting news: I am happy to announce that this year I will be taking another crack at the Funnest Job In Comics, and drawing the winner of the Phoenix’s STAR IN A COMIC competition!
If you’re not familiar, this is a now-annual tradition run by the fine people The Phoenix, where they invite the comic’s readers to send in their own ideas for a new story, and then one of the Phoenix’s creators has a go at creating a strip out of it, which is then published in the Phoenix itself. I drew the first ever version of this, back in whatever-year-it-was (*checks notes*: 2017???) when I got to draw a fantastic story called TALE OF THE DRAGON BOY by an incredibly talented young Phoenix reader named Orlando who, good God, now that I think about it, is probably a grown adult with a job and stuff by now, because TIME. It was such a fun assignment, getting to tap right into this amazing well of creativity and imagination direct from the comic’s readers and have a go at doing it all justice on the page, and I am very excited to be getting the chance to do it again. …just a reminder that I will be doing a MEGA ROBO MASTERCLASS - an online digital workshop - with the aforementioned good people at The Phoenix, this Friday 9th August at 10am. I’ll be chatting with my friend Joe “Tabs Inkspots’ Human Assistant” Brady, teaching some how-to-draw-robots basics, talking all about Alex and Freddy and some of their DEADLIEST ENEMIES, and looking back at the entire decade-long run of Mega Robo Bros as we race mind-bogglingly towards its final few weeks. I was seeing this as kind of the After-Party for all of Mega Robo Bros, but it turns out we’re doing it with a few weeks still to go, so it’s the… Pre-Party? Either way, please do come join us, I think it will be very fun! Details and tickets here!
Oh and since somebody asked, we have worked out a SPOILER POLICY for the event. We’re going to be taking questions from the audience and chatting about them throughout the event, but so as not to ruin things for people who read the series in book form, we will only be discussing the events of the first seven books, i.e. nothing from the current series in the Phoenix.
“No fair,” I hear you cry. “I wanted to ask a question about [SHOCKING DEVELOPMENT X] or indeed [MIND-BLOWING PLOT TWIST Y]”. Well, don’t worry! If you have any questions about anything in the current series, we will be hanging around on the stream after the workshop for a special, entirely optional BONUS CHAT where we will get into, well, basically whatever you want to ask questions about! This bit will not be in the recording of the event, and will basically self-destruct from the internet the second we finish. So if you are desperate to ask a question / harangue me about how dare I write something like [EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATING PLOT BEAT Z], this is your chance!
