Mmmm, Donuts
Hello, dear Neill Cameron Newsletter readers! I am delighted to introduce to you my brand new comic strip, starting this very week in The Phoenix,! Meet… DONUT SQUAD!
Guys I am having so much fun with this ridiculous comic. But this is my cool behind-the-scenes newsletter, right? You want to hear some INSIGHTS into the CREATIVE PROCESS! Well brace yourselves for…
THE SECRET ORIGIN OF DONUT SQUAD!
I had a dumb idea and made myself laugh!
I tried drawing a couple of strips to see if there was anything there.
There was!
I sent a few to my editor to see if it was anything remotely publish-able.
It (apparently) was!
I sat down to see if I had any more ideas.
About a year’s worth came pouring out in one sitting!
This is what is known in creative circles as THE DREAM, BABY.
As I think I’ve mentioned on here, I’ve been working flat out on the final series of Mega Robo Bros lately, and it’s very much that story in full-on Epic Mode, and it’s a lot of pressure and more than slightly emotionally exhausting. (I’m not making it sound super fun to read, am I? It will be super fun to read! It’s just emotionally exhausting FOR ME). Anyway I think maybe the pressure of it all broke my brain slightly, and DONUT SQUAD is the result.
The joy of it is that, within the basic remit ‘there are donuts’, I can draw a strip about absolutely whatever dumb thing pops into my head at a given moment. There’s comics coming up about:
CONSPIRACY THEORIES!
GHOST STORIES!
CULTS!
DOOMED LOVE!
…and so very much more. I am just having the best old time with this thing, honestly.
I guess the other joy of it is: there are donuts? I get to draw and talk and think about donuts all day. Which is ALMOST as much fun as actually eating donuts, and definitely involves less calories.
Also it means that when I head off to my studio to work I can say “well, time to make the donuts”, which: okay, maybe I am the only person who finds this funny. But I find it VERY FUNNY.
Check it out in a Phoenix near you, every week… FOREVER? Let’s see how it goes!
IN NON-DONUT-RELATED NEWS
My Kickstarter project, X365: A Graphic Novel by Neill Cameron is about halfway through it’s 30-day funding period! It’s currently sitting around 400% funded - thank you so much, everyone who’s supported it - so I think it’s safe to say this thing is happening, but don’t let that stop you checking it out and pledging! I swore I wasn’t going to get all obsessed with extra bits and stretch goals and whatnot, but… I am making some nice postcards? Just as a little extra thank you!
OH AND ALSO
*Another* reason to check out the latest issue of The Phoenix is, it features the conclusion to my Exciting Fantasy Adventure Featuring A Cute Tiger, THE WEIRDING WAVES. Includes the single craziest spread I ever attempted to draw! I’d share a look here but it is simply TOO BIG FOR SUBSTACK so you’ll just have to trust me. It’s a good time, check it out!
Okay, I have to go and emotionally exhaust myself drawing robot comics some more. Talk soon! And remember…
