If you’re a regular reader of this newsletter, you may be aware of MEGA ROBO BROS, the graphic novel series I just recently got done spending the last ten years drawing. I am pretty sure I have mentioned it on here?
You may also have heard me mention THE VILLINOOS, the comic that my son Logan has been drawing since he was like seven or something -
- and which after many years and many hundreds of issues, we then turned into a collaboration which he writes and I draw for The Phoenix?
But what you may not have known is that there is a SECRET PARALLEL HISTORY of both of these comics, which is that since Logan was like eight or something we have been drawing, for our own amusement, a series of crossover comics between the two, titled MEGA ROBO VILLINOOS!
Logan would draw his characters, I would draw mine, and we would just fold over a stack of pieces of A3 paper and make it up as we went along. These have only ever been for our own amusement (and from time to time the amusement of the kids at Comics Club, where I sometimes take them in and perform dramatic readings), but now we have taken it to the next level and drawn a new issue… that YOU CAN READ TOO??
Announcing: MEGA ROBO VILLINOOS: INVASION LONDON! We made this as a special, HIGHLY EXCLUSIVE SUPER LIMITED EDITION BOOTLEG comic, specially for Yo! Comics Fair in London next weekend! Logan and I will be jointly running a workshop, on the theme of ‘Making Comics Together’, and so I thought it might be fun to bring along One We Made Earlier!
32 pages, full colour, the epic tale of Alex and Freddy meeting Neville and his dad, and all the INTERDIMENSIONAL SHENANIGANS and PLANETARY ALIEN INVASIONS that ensue! We made it the exact same way we always have - me drawing my characters, Logan drawing his, and just having fun and making each other laugh.
It’s just that this time, we then went and coloured it and lettered it (semi-)properly and got a bunch printed. And now, we are now going to stand behind a table attempting to sell them to people! Basically it is all part of the boy’s ongoing Unofficial Comics Apprenticeship.
Here is a little newsletter-formatted sneak peek, just to give you a sense of the flavour of the thing:
CLIFFHANGER!
Huge thanks to the wonderful people at the Phoenix, particularly our editor Joe Brady, for basically discretely looking the other way and letting us do this, and to Rich Hardiman at Comic Printing UK for turning it around so fast and doing such a great job making them. It’s basically us, drawing a fan comic of our own characters, and making each other laugh. I think it came out rather well, and I am excited for you to get the chance to read it! If you are at Yo! Comics Fair in South London next weekend.
(If you’re NOT, don’t worry! If I have any copies left… I dunno, we’ll figure something out. It’ll be fine!)
Okay thanks bye xx
We desperately need a copy of this. Please stick me on the leftover copies waiting list. :)
My 9 year old daughter would adore a copy of this. We haven’t been able to make it out and about recently due to her anxiety but this would be a huge surprise for her (thank you for signing her book for her at Mr B’s - they were able to ship and that was devoured). Just tell me what I need to do to make it happen 😊
