I don’t usually hold with diary comics. Don’t get me wrong, I love reading them; getting glimpses into other cartoonist’s interesting, hilarious and adorable and / or excruciating lives. But I’ve never really felt compelled to make them myself. The essential problem is that my life is basically incredibly boring, particularly when considered from a visual storytelling perspective. Endless pages of me, sitting at a drawing board, feeling mildly stressed out? My assumption is that you wouldn’t want to read such a thing, any more than I would want to draw it.
However, for a brief period back in 2017, something changed. Specifically, what changed was that I set off on a magical adventure in a ruined, fantastical world, and had lots of excitingly perilous adventures fighting monsters. Honestly, it was a real Breath of fresh air. I’d go so far as to say, it was pretty Wild.
Also, I took my kid along for the ride. He wasn’t really quite old enough to fight all the monsters himself yet at the time, but he seemed to enjoy watching my failure to do so. And as we wandered around, me getting brutally slain by terrifying beasts on a regular basis, and my son laughing at me, I thought: now this would make a fun diary comic. Parenting dynamics and the minutiae of daily life. But, you know, with monsters.
…hey, guess what? Those last few paragraphs there were the foreword to my new digital comic, KILL IT DADDY, which is available RIGHT NOW!
You can download it from my web shop, right here: https://neillcameron.bigcartel.com/product/kill-it-daddy-digital-collection
I say new, it’s a collection of a daily strip I shared on the internet back in 2017 under the title Our Daily Breath, but I have renamed it for the purposes of this collection because uhhh that was a terrible title, I have no idea what I was thinking. I might share a few more peeks at it here in the newsletter, but: why wait? Go buy the thing and you can read it all, right now!
Anyway: who’s excited for Tears of the Kingdom? I am! So excited that I will end up drawing all-new diary comics about it? And posting them right here on substack for you to read? I’m making no promises, but: let’s see!
Breath of the Wild is the best game of all time and you can not change my mind. We will see what Tears of the Kingdom has to say about that...
Looks awesome - felt bad for the poor dad. My girls would laugh at me too 🤣
