Hello!
It feels like a bit of a weird day to be posting out Fun News About Comics Stuff, but, well, here we are. The world keeps turning, eh. For now. Touch wood.
Anyway.
It’s only a little over a week till the beating heart of UK comics, the legendary Thought Bubble comics convention in Harrogate! As I mentioned here, I will be attending with my dear friends / employers at the Phoenix, and I have a bit more information about where you can find me and what I’ll be doing!
SATURDAY 16th November
12:30 - 13:30 I will be doing a WORKSHOP! ‘The Phoenix Presents: Comic Making with Neill Cameron’ - workshop space is in the Kids Zone, Bubbleboy Hall
15:00-16:30 I will be SIGNING - at the Phoenix tables, again in the Kids Zone, Bubbleboy Hall
SUNDAY 17th November
11:30-12:30 I will be on a PANEL - The Joy of Children’s Comics, with the brilliant Sam Davies, Laura Howell and Bernard Mensah. Panel Room 2, Queen’s Suite.
…and that’s just me! There’s lots of other brilliant stuff for kids - and indeed for people who are not kids - all weekend. Special shout out to a couple of other activities happening in the Kids Zone on Saturday: you’ve got the fantastic Sonia Leong teaching how to draw Manga characters at 14:00, which will be brilliant because Sonia is brilliant, and specifically is a really great teacher. And then at 15:30 there’s a Screen Printing workshop with Sean Azzopardi which I think will be really interesting and cool, not least because Sean will be showing you how to screen print your very own DONUT SQUAD print! Yes that’s right! BONUS DONUTS!
Hopefully see some of you there. More info and tickets on the Thought Bubble website!
If you can’t make that but you do enjoy donuts, may I draw your attention to my next Live Online Digital Event Thing with the Phoenix - it’s called CREATE YOUR OWN DONUTS, and it’s on Saturday, November 23!
I realise that the name makes it sound like some kind of online cookery course, but no. I promise it is drawing. We will be drawing donuts! Now obviously the Donut Squad have been banished forever from the Phoenix and will definitely never be appearing ever again, so I guess this will really be an In Memoriam kind of event? Anyway I will say no more about it but I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be VERY FUN. Find out more info and get tickets on the Phoenix website!
And if you can’t make it to either of those things don’t worry, I have just been looking at my calendar for next year and it is already hilarious just how many opportunities you will have to see me out and about in 2025.
Anyway. Are you okay? You look like you could use cheering up. Here, have some donuts.
The first appearance of Caramel Jack there; at the time I drew it, probably the silliest thing I had ever drawn, now a significant recurring character and indeed substantial part of how I make my living. Life is weird! Anyway, if you like donuts: boy oh boy have we got some exciting news coming up for YOU. More soon!
I was forwarded a very plaintive and heart-rending letter from a 7-year-old reader of the Phoenix who was very upset that the Donut Squad have been replaced by the Bagel Battalion, and to that reader I will merely say HANG IN THERE KID.
In fact, same goes for all of you. Take care everyone, look after yourselves and, ideally, each other. Okay thanks bye xx
I suppose the Donut Squad will need to wait 4 more years and then mount a fresh campaign to return from the void to which they have sadly been consigned...
